Who’s to say what is right? How do we decide what is right or wrong? Moral or
immoral? For a little over a month I have spent each week looking at different avenues
that dealt with the question of moral decision making. First I learned the different forms
of decision making skills people use. I was then able to use this information in evaluating
verses from the Bible, the movie SourceCode, and the story of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.
After seeing the different forms of decision making in these forms, it made me look at my
own life and how I make my decisions. I don’t feel that from spending time with this
question I have changed my views of decision making. I also don’t believe that I follow
just one way of decision making. I firmly believe that every situation is different and I
can’t make my decisions based solely off of how I made a previous decision. Just because I
feel that the utilitarianism approach is best for one situation, doesn’t mean I think it will
lead to the best decision in another situation. However, this doesn’t mean that I haven’t
gained throughout these past few weeks a greater understanding of the background of
how I’m making my decisions. I can now put a name to the ways I am making my
decisions and can also look and see that people in the Bible were using these same
decision making skills. All in all, this was a great learning opportunity to look deeper into
why we may make the decisions that we do.
