Determinism, Free Will and Compatibilism: So What?

At the start of this blog, I had no idea what determinism or compatibilism were.  I had a

vague idea of what each were but not the names that went with them.  After looking into

different aspects of these along with the concept of free will for the past seven weeks, I

have a greater knowledge and appreciation in the roles they play in ones life.  I myself

believed at the beginning of this semester in the idea of compatibilism; the combination

of both determinism and free will.  Now, I still feel the same way but with a greater

understanding and stronger belief in it.

So what does this all mean for my day to day life?  Not much.  I will still go about making

decisions that I feel are best but there will always be predetermined things that are out of

my control.  However, even though it won’t affect my decision making, I can look at what

has gone on in my past and what is ahead of me, and see both determinism and free will

at work and have a better understanding of what it all means.  As I look back at the movie

“The Adjustment Bureau,” I realize that there are many things in my life that aren’t

predetermined but there are a few, important decisions that are.  I also never thought

about my predetermined path changing throughout my lifetime.  The movie showed that

as your life progresses, that path can indeed change, and I fully buy into this line of

thinking.  So as my journey through life continues, I can’t wait to see what is in my hand

of cards!
